In 1881, a small one-room structure nestled among trees marked the humble beginnings of First Baptist Church Chattahoochee. It was then known as Antioch Church. This original structure stood where the fire station now stands on Main Street. The congregation later moved to Cox Crossroads, the present-day intersection of Moores Mill and Howell Mill Roads. Known then as Seven Miles Church due to its distance from Atlanta, the location proved challenging for members traveling from Whittier Mill Village. The church disbanded in 1887. The story of First Baptist Church Chattahoochee, however, was far from over. In 1897, under the leadership of Rev. William Tuck Sammons, a group from Seven Miles Church sought to establish a new church. They gathered under a grand oak tree near the Broadbrent house near Whittier Mill. Inspired by a sermon delivered by Reverend S. L. Harris, the group formally separated from Seven Miles Church, establishing the New Antioch Baptist Church. This nascent congregation held services in various homes until 1899. The completion of Chattahoochee School offered a more permanent home on its top floor. The desire for their own dedicated space of worship led the members of New Antioch Baptist Church to approach Mr. Harry English of the Chattahoochee Brick Company in 1903. Mr. English generously donated the land where First Baptist Church Chattahoochee stands today. A white frame structure was erected and dedicated in May 1905. First Baptist Church Chattahoochee continued to grow. In 1941, plans were initiated for a larger sanctuary. This new sanctuary was dedicated in September 1942. The church’s name was officially changed from New Antioch to First Baptist Church, Chattahoochee, Georgia, later shortened to FBC Chattahoochee. The church has been guided by numerous dedicated pastors throughout its history. Each pastor has contributed unique gifts and abilities, leading the congregation and furthering its mission.
