Stepping onto the grounds of First Assembly of God in Houston, one can almost feel the echoes of passionate sermons and uplifting hymns. First Assembly of God has been a beacon of faith in Houston for over ninety years. Its story began not in a grand hall, but over a drugstore on North Main. A black woman evangelist, a servant of Mrs. Thomas H. Ball, shared her faith. This led to Mrs. Ball’s conversion and the birth of a Sunday School held under a tent. The congregation eventually moved to a permanent location over the drugstore. In 1915, they purchased a Baptist church building on Bishop Street, officially becoming known as the Church of God. The church’s journey continued with a move to West 11th Street in the Heights in 1936, where a small building was erected. The church’s vision expanded in 1953 with the establishment of the South Texas Bible Institute. This institute, later renamed Gulf Coast Bible College, played a crucial role in training future ministers. In 1975, the First Assembly of God found its current home in Northwest Houston. In 1977, the church further broadened its community impact by starting the Wee Care Day Care. First Assembly of God’s story is one of growth, adaptation, and a commitment to serving the community. From humble beginnings to a multi-faceted ministry, it has remained a steadfast presence in Houston.
