The Firnhaberauheide is a reminder of a time long ago when Augsburg was dotted with open grasslands. Imagine once, this area was a part of the Lech Valley wetlands, a vital stepping stone for species traveling between the Alps and the Jura Mountains.

Its story is one of resilience and conservation. It was once considered a poor pasture, known as “Little Siberia” by settlers who used it for their animals, mainly sheep and goats. Firnhaberauheide is known for being the only place in the entire Lech Valley where you can find the Roitleibig Grashüpfer, a beautiful grasshopper with a bright red body.
