“A different kind of faith community,” that’s what Fireside Church of God set out to be. Fireside Church of God started with a simple letter from Rev. Debbie Gerkin. She envisioned a place where everyone could participate, ask questions, and embrace diversity.
The story of Fireside Church of God began with a potluck and communion on October 17, 1993. It was held at Rev. Gerkin’s home. Ten people attended. They wanted to create this special community together. These ten people wanted to keep meeting regularly.
Fireside Church of God evolved from a support group to something much bigger. It became a place for study, mission work, and important discussions. The church created its own mission statement and unique style of worship.
In June 1995, Fireside Church of God applied to become a chartered church. It sought recognition from the Christian Church Disciples of Christ Central Rocky Mountain Region. By December 1995, Fireside was officially recognized as a church in formation.
Fireside’s commitment to diversity led to a significant achievement. It became the first Open and Affirming congregation in its region. This meant Fireside Church of God welcomed everyone.
The nontraditional approach of Fireside Church of God raised questions. To share its vision, Fireside led an interest group at the 1997 Denver General Assembly. Before Fireside, the New Church Development Committee only worked with traditional churches. Fireside Church of God helped create new guidelines for diverse church models.
On November 11, 2000, Fireside Church of God achieved full recognition. The Regional Board of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ Central Rocky Mountain Region voted unanimously. Fireside was now a church in full standing.
The story of Fireside Church of God is one of constant evolution. Fireside remains committed to being a “different kind of faith community”. The spirit of God is creative. The future of Fireside Church of God holds endless possibilities.
