A grand fire station, wouldn’t you say? Fire Station 23, rising proudly before you, has a history as dramatic as a Hollywood blockbuster. Here in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, Fire Station 23 wasn’t just any firehouse. Built in 1910, it served as the Los Angeles Fire Department headquarters until 1920. It was home to every fire chief from 1910 to 1928. Imagine the comings and goings of these brave leaders, right here, within these walls. Its construction caused quite a stir. The station’s luxurious interior, featuring Peruvian mahogany and Vermont marble, earned it the nickname “Taj Mahal” of firehouses. The $53,000 price tag in 1910 sparked public outcry. Critics argued that three regular fire stations could have been built for that amount. But Fire Station 23 stood defiant. It served the city faithfully for 50 years. Fifteen firefighters and ten horses were stationed here. The station housed horse-drawn wagons, a chief’s buggy, and a state-of-the-art pumper. Picture the clang of the bell, the thunder of hooves, as the horses sprang into action, responding to emergencies. One of the first major calls was a grueling ten-hour battle against a blaze in the old Byrne Building. The chief’s wife, Addie Scott, recalled the era of horse-drawn engines. She described the horses’ intelligence and how they would position themselves, ready for duty when the alarm sounded. She also remembered struggling to wax the extensive floors, a testament to the station’s grand scale. After its closure in 1960, Fire Station 23 fell into disrepair. Looters stripped it of its copper, brass, and even the fire poles. But its story didn’t end there. The station found a new life as a popular filming location. Its unique architecture and “turn-of-the-century” charm attracted filmmakers. From Ghostbusters to The Mask, and numerous other films, Fire Station 23 graced the silver screen. Today, Fire Station 23 awaits its next chapter. Plans are underway to transform it into a youth arts center. It is a fitting evolution for a building that once housed heroes and now aims to inspire future generations.
