Peering through the gates, can you smell that faint scent of smoke? It is a reminder of the vital training that happens within these walls. This is the Fire Rescue Training Centre, or FRTC Frankfurt, a place where heroes are forged.
The FRTC Frankfurt is one of Germany’s most modern firefighting training facilities. It is located in Eckenheim. Imagine a space dedicated to preparing firefighters for the unpredictable challenges they will face.
Opened in 2013, the FRTC Frankfurt has been training firefighters for over a decade. The center’s design incorporates real-world elements. These elements create realistic training scenarios.
One of the FRTC Frankfurt’s most unique features is its own standard gauge rail system. This rail system runs 150 meters through the facility. The south end of the track is even laid out as a tramway in a mock residential area. On the opposite side, a loading dock provides a space for industrial training.
A set of points sits between two S-bends in the middle section. Straight ahead, you will find an enclosed building. It houses a mock underground station.
Step inside the U-Bahn station. You might notice the real timetables. The platform signage displays a U10 line departure to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. It goes via Konstablerwache station and Römer.
To the west of the U-Bahn station lies an industrial siding. It includes a loading dock with overhead line electrification. This mimics main line rail transport in Germany.
But what about the trains themselves? As of 2021, two pieces of rolling stock resided permanently on the railway system. These can be moved around depending on the training scenarios.
A fifth-generation Frankfurt U-Bahn U5 train, number 602, calls the FRTC Frankfurt home. Damaged by flooding, it was restored cosmetically. It was then stripped of useful parts before being sold to the Frankfurt fire brigade.
Imagine the night the fire brigade towed train 602 along U-Bahn Line A to the Eckenheim Depot. Road transport handled the final meters to the training facility.
The second piece of railway stock is a four-wheel railway tank wagon. Deutsche Bahn provided it. The Frankfurt harbor railway delivered it to the East Harbor for the fire brigade.
The FRTC Frankfurt also offers a direct three-year training program to become a firefighter. This comprehensive program prepares individuals for the demands of the profession.
Basic training courses are also conducted here. They cover rescue techniques, legal principles, accident insurance, and vehicle and equipment knowledge. Trainees also learn how to behave in dangerous situations. They practice extinguishing fires and providing technical assistance. A first aid course with life-saving measures is also required before the basic course.
After successfully passing the exam, one is a firefighter candidate.
