The story of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School began with a vision. Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia wanted a school where students could pursue their artistic passions. In 1936 he founded the High School of Music & Art. Then in 1948 the High School of Performing Arts was created. Both schools merged in 1961. In 1984, they found a permanent home in a new building next to Lincoln Center. This building was named after the visionary mayor. Thus Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School was born.
