The Finkenwerder Ringbrücke-West forms part of the Finkenwerder Ring. It carries Finkenwerder Strasse over the port railway tracks. These tracks are no ordinary lines. They represent the sole rail link to the Container Terminals Hamburg and Burchardkai. Imagine the sheer volume of goods transported daily beneath this very structure.
In 1970, the original bridge was constructed using reinforced concrete. It comprised two sections. Each section had two spans. These spans rested on shared supports. By the 1980s, cracks began to appear. This was due to alkali-silica reaction, often called “concrete cancer”.
By 2012, the bridge was under constant monitoring. A 2014 study confirmed the problem was worsening. This posed risks to the bridge’s stability and usability. A replacement was essential to meet future traffic demands.
To maintain both road and rail traffic during construction, the bridge replacement was split into two phases. Throughout the project, at least three lanes of Finkenwerder Strasse remained open.
The first phase started in early 2022 and finished in autumn 2023. During this time, traffic used the northern part of the old bridge. Once the southern part was complete, traffic shifted onto it. Then, from autumn 2023 to mid-2025, the northern bridge was rebuilt.
Full closures of the Finkenwerder Ringbrücke-West were unavoidable on several weekends. During these times, traffic diverted via the southern part of the Finkenwerder Ring. To minimize disruption to port operations, track closures coincided with holidays such as Easter and Pentecost in 2022 and 2024.
The old bridge was completely demolished and replaced on the same site. The project also included upgrades to the adjacent sections of Finkenwerder Strasse, spanning about 230 meters.
The new Finkenwerder Ringbrücke-West consists of two structures with different support widths. The steel superstructures are single-span tied arch bridges. They feature orthotropic deck plates. The support widths and skew of the abutments accommodate the port railway tracks below. The northern superstructure spans approximately 48 meters, while the southern one covers about 59 meters.
The total width of the new Finkenwerder Ringbrücke-West is around 38 meters. Each superstructure carries three lanes, each 3.5 meters wide. Additionally, there is a combined pedestrian and cycle path on each side, measuring 2.65 meters in width.
The southern superstructure, a tied arch bridge, is sixty meters long and eighteen meters wide. It weighs 621 tons. A large 600-ton crawler crane was used to move the southern part into place. The operation took seventeen hours. The crane took 57 hours to assemble. It required 40 deliveries of crane booms and other parts.
