Who was Lady Finella? A question whispered on the wind across the centuries. Right here stands Gonville and Caius College a place of learning. But its very stones hold echoes of a dramatic past. Lady Finella a name synonymous with vengeance and tragedy. Her story is one of betrayal and desperate acts.

The legend of Finella is woven into the fabric of Scottish history. A noblewoman daughter of Cuncar Mormaer of Angus. She was a descendant of Pictish royalty. Sources vary on her name sometimes called Fenella Finuela Finnguala or Sibill. Her tale is mostly known through John of Fordun’s chronicles. Fordun wrote in the late 14th century. He based his account on local medieval folklore.

Finella’s son met his end at the hands of King Kenneth II. Some say Kenneth III. This act sparked a fire of revenge in Finella’s heart. She sought retribution. With the aid of the king’s rivals. She devised a cunning plan. A death trap in a Fettercairn cottage. A statue of a boy stood in the center. Touching its head triggered concealed crossbows. A hail of arrows ended Kenneth’s reign.

The story claims Kenneth II died in Fettercairn in 995. Whether Finella’s plot was responsible remains debated. But the king’s death is historical fact. After the assassination Finella fled towards the coast. The king’s soldiers cornered her. She was at a waterfall near St Cyrus. Rather than face capture. She leapt to her death. A 150-foot plunge into the valley now called Den Finella. A fitting end to a life lived on the edge of legend.

Finella’s story is more than a historical anecdote. It’s a testament to the enduring power of revenge and the tragic consequences of unchecked fury. A story that continues to captivate centuries later. The walls of Gonville and Caius College remain silent witnesses. They stand as quiet reminders of a dramatic saga. A saga forever linked to the name Lady Finella.
