The imposing presence of the Fine Arts Building commands attention. Its Romanesque Revival style whispers tales of a bygone era. This twelve-story masterpiece stands proudly at 811 West 7th Street. Designed by Albert Raymond Walker and Percy Augustus Eisen in 1927 the Fine Arts Building opened its doors to artists and artisans. Its H-shaped layout is unique. The façade is a stunning display of smooth light-colored stone. The lower three stories boast a trapezoidal profile echoing Renaissance palaces. A grand arched entrance dominates the central axis. Intricate terracotta reliefs adorn the walls. Plant motifs and fantastical creatures embellish the arches. The upper stories showcase a double order of arches and spiral columns. Animal heads and foliage detail the capitals. A magnificent tympanum crowned with architectural sculpture completes the façade.

Inside the two-story lobby is equally breathtaking. Large wall arches enclose smaller arches below. A balcony-like gallery overlooks the space. This design mimics the matroneum of a church. A central pool reflects light. It’s adorned with bronze sculptures by Burt Johnson. The walls are a canvas of ceramic relief panels. Seventeen elegant showcases once displayed artwork. Now they feature the work of current tenants. Famed Pasadena artist Ernest Batchelder’s tiles cover the floor and walls. The building’s rich history includes oil wildcatter Russell E Havenstrite who owned a penthouse. In 2012 the Sorgente Group of America purchased the Fine Arts Building. It continues to be a popular location. It has even graced the silver screen appearing in the film (500) Days of Summer.
