From farmlands to a residential haven, the Financial District of Los Angeles has witnessed a remarkable transformation. Today, we stand at the heart of LA’s commerce, a district pulsing with the rhythm of finance. The Financial District, bordered by the Harbor Freeway and 9th Street, tells a story of ambition and evolution. Originally a tranquil expanse of agricultural fields, it blossomed into a residential area dotted with single-family homes. Around the turn of the 20th century, Victorian-era Downtown LA began its southward expansion. Businesses were drawn to the area, setting the stage for the Financial District’s rise. Around 1915, 7th Street became a high-end shopping destination. This shift was triggered by J. W. Robinson’s decision to establish its flagship store west of the existing Broadway shopping district. This move attracted other upscale retailers like Ville de Paris and Coulter’s, solidifying the area’s reputation for luxury. The Financial District experienced a construction boom between 1920 and 1928, with thirteen prominent office buildings rising to shape the skyline. By 1929, every plot along 7th Street, between Figueroa and Los Angeles Streets, had been developed. Despite its retail prominence, the district faced a decline in the 1980s due to suburbanization and the concentration of financial activities on Bunker Hill. The closure of flagship department stores like Bullock’s and Robinson’s further impacted the area. However, the opening of the Seventh Market Place mall in 1986, now known as FIGat7th, breathed new life into the district. The arrival of the 7th Street/Metro Center station in 1991 further enhanced its accessibility and appeal. The Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency played a crucial role in shaping the modern Financial District. It aimed to offer an alternative to the declining Spring Street Financial District. This vision fueled the district’s revitalization and transformation into the vibrant hub we see today. The Financial District is more than just steel and glass. It is a testament to LA’s ever-evolving spirit, a place where history and progress intertwine.
