Look closely at the Filialkirche St Leonhard. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place steeped in history a silent witness to centuries of faith and devotion.
Originally mentioned in 1407 its roots reach back to the early 13th century. Legend whispers of an even older foundation. This unassuming church has a rich past. It was once dedicated to Saint George. Later Saint Leonhard’s patronage became dominant. His veneration boosted pilgrimage in the 18th century. Numerous votive offerings remain testament to answered prayers. The church was a gift. Generous patrons endowed it with wealth. These offerings reflect a profound connection between the people and their saint.
The Filialkirche St Leonhard boasts a unique architecture. Its high red tower crowned with a baroque onion dome is a striking landmark. It stands proudly overlooking the Königsseeache and Untersberg mountains. The church’s simple late Gothic nave is surrounded by a peaceful cemetery. The south side features a beautiful late Gothic portal. To the right a niche protects a carved figure of Saint Leonhard himself. Notice the intricate details. The west tower houses a 1644 dated coat of arms. It is from Ferdinand of Wittelsbach. He was Archbishop and Elector of Cologne and Provost of Berchtesgaden. The double onion dome above was added later in 1738.
Step inside. Marvel at the neoclassical high altar. Crafted by Josef Haslauer it incorporates older paintings and sculptures. The altar’s centerpiece depicts Saint Leonhard interceding for Mary and the Christ Child. Look closely. Flanking Saint Leonhard are Saint George and Saint Martin. On the side altars scenes of the Holy Family and the Lamentation of Christ unfold.
The pulpit is another masterpiece. Crafted in 1692 by Tratz it features carved figures representing Church Fathers. Their artistry shows the skill of Stangassinger and Pertiller. The organ dates from 1850. These elements add layers of history and artistic expression.
