A simple wooden cross stands proudly before Filialkirche Sankt Hedwig. This unassuming symbol tells a story of faith perseverance and community spirit. Welcome to Filialkirche Sankt Hedwig in Gorlitz Rauschwalde. This church isn’t just a building it’s a testament to the enduring faith of its congregation.

Filialkirche Sankt Hedwig is a Roman Catholic church. It’s a branch of the Holy Wenceslas parish in Gorlitz. Its patron saint is Saint Hedwig of Silesia a powerful figure in the region’s history. The current church building however is not the first.

The original Filialkirche Sankt Hedwig was built between 1966 and 1968. This was a challenging time. East Germany was under Communist rule. The building of the church faced many obstacles. The state restricted construction. No state-funded resources were allowed. No visible cross could be placed on the roof. No tower was permitted. The church was allowed to be nothing more than a simple barrack. Despite these obstacles the community built their church almost entirely with their own hands.

They worked tirelessly after work and on weekends. This shared struggle strengthened their bond. Their faith was powerful. Their dedication shone through. In 1997 the barrack-style church was replaced with the modern building we see today. Bishop Rudolf Muller consecrated this new building a true testament to community.

Remarkably much of the original church’s interior was saved. The altar ambo and tabernacle were all preserved. The altar windows remain. They depict scenes of Saint Hedwig’s life and Jesus Christ. Even today the artistry of the windows draws the eyes and touches the soul.

A striking feature is the church’s metal cross. Its rusted look is artful. The corpus is made of green glass. Light from the large rear window filters through it. This creates a beautiful light play. The exterior cross stands at an angle. It reflects the tilted crosses in the Stations of the Cross inside.

Filialkirche Sankt Hedwig has faced many challenges. It was even briefly dissolved in 2009. However it was later reconstituted as part of a larger parish. It remains a central point of worship in the community. The building itself is now a Filialkirche of the Holy Wenceslas parish. This simple church speaks volumes about the enduring spirit of faith. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living symbol of hope resilience and the unwavering power of community. It’s a place where generations have found comfort hope and solace.
