“Welcome to the Figurentheater-Kolleg Bochum. Can you hear the echoes of creativity buzzing within these walls?” The Figurentheater-Kolleg is more than just a building. It’s a place where imagination takes center stage.
Standing here at Hohe Eiche 27, you are in front of the Figurentheater-Kolleg Bochum. It is a place with a rich history of artistic expression. Since 1977, the Figurentheater-Kolleg has been a state-recognized institution for continuing education. It stands proudly in Bochum’s Langendreer neighborhood.
The building itself is a piece of history. Built in 1903, this former eight-classroom elementary school now fosters a different kind of learning. The two-story brick building has been under monument protection since 1998.
In 1991, the torch was passed to the Association for the Promotion of the Figurentheater-Kolleg Bochum. Before that, the German Institute for Puppetry, which closed in 1991, supported it.
Step inside, and you’ll find more than just classrooms. The Figurentheater-Kolleg boasts a workshop and a studio stage. The studio stage offers 80 seats on a rising tribune. There is also a spacious foyer.
The Figurentheater-Kolleg’s curriculum is diverse. It offers courses in acting, voice work, and visual arts. You can also explore creative writing and clown training here. Other courses include fairy tale narration, cabaret, and sound and lighting technology. The courses are open to everyone and can be combined freely.
Many well-known artists have emerged from this Kolleg. Martin Wuttke and Christoph Bochdansky are among its alumni. German artists like Jochem Ahmann and Andreas Becker have taught here. International instructors like Neville Tranter have also shared their expertise.
The Figurentheater-Kolleg embraces all facets of figure theater. This includes everything from hand puppets and marionettes to object and material theater. Visual theater also has its place here.
Participants come from across Europe and overseas to learn figure theater. More than 50 professional figure theaters have emerged from this Kolleg. Puppeteers in media have roots here too. They bring figures to life in shows like Käpt’n Blaubär and Sesame Street. Clown and fairy tale training participants also tour Germany.
FIBO presents children’s theater on the in-house studio stage for two seasons each year. The performers are former Figurentheater-Kolleg graduates. The studio stage also hosts workshop performances and final presentations.
The Figurentheater-Kolleg also extends its reach beyond its walls. It stages performances in the district. It presents walk acts at events like the Ruhr Festival opening. The Kolleg also participates in the Langendreer Christmas market. Its members even tell fairy tales in cafes.
