Before us stands Fiftieth Street Church of Christ. It is a beacon of faith and community in Savannah. Fiftieth Street Church of Christ started with sixteen devoted individuals. They gathered in 1987 under Brother Curtis Coleman, Sr.’s leadership.

Early services occurred in Sexton Hall Mortuary’s chapel. The growing congregation then met in various spots including Forsyth Park. They also used the EOA building and a local union building provided by Francis Bright Johnson. Brother Coleman guided the group until he moved on. Brothers Herbert Bryant, Sr., and Horace Hall, Sr., then preached.

Brother Jessie Drayton was later commissioned as minister. He encouraged the purchase of a permanent worship space. Brother Horace Hall, Sr., aided in buying a building at 1601 Abercorn St. It became known as the Midtown Church of Christ.

In the summer of 1991, Brother Lynah reached out to Brother Linnie L. Darden, III. He was a young minister from Sylvania, Metter, and Statesboro. Brother Darden became the interim minister. His ministry expanded. Brothers Anthony Bryant, Cordell Hall, Jack White, Jr., and Marvin Johnson joined as assistant ministers. Marvin Johnson was the Youth Minister.

The church relocated to 732 East 50th Street in 2000. This is located in Ardsley Park. It was renamed Fiftieth Street Church of Christ. The congregation has since grown spiritually. Since 1991, over 300 souls have been baptized. Brother Darden’s gospel messages are known for their purity.

Fiftieth Street Church of Christ is deeply involved in community benevolence. They distribute hygiene supplies and clothing. This includes coats, t-shirts, socks, and winter wear for the homeless. Nursing home visits are also regular. Each year, they provide Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets. The church has also offered hurricane relief to Caribbean churches.

The mission is to glorify God through worship and service. The Fiftieth Street Church of Christ creates a welcoming space for spiritual growth.
