Fields Corner’s heart beats at Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street. This bustling area is known for its diverse residents. Vietnamese-American culture thrives here. It attracts many visitors to its cultural shops and restaurants.

Let’s rewind to the late 1700s. The Field family, prominent in commerce, owned six houses here. Isaac Newsome Field’s home, built in 1795, still stands as a reminder. It was the family’s influence that gave Fields Corner its name.

Fast forward to the late 1800s. The streetcar arrived. Fields Corner transformed into a regional trade center for Boston.

The close-knit community defines Fields Corner. Viet-AID, established in 1994, supports local residents. In 2002, they opened a community center for cultural events. Viet-AID also created affordable housing and a community garden.

Fields Corner Main Street enhances the neighborhood. They improve storefronts and beautify streetscapes. They also support local businesses.

In 2010, Fields Corner received a facelift. The Dorchester Avenue Project brought significant changes. Improvements included new crosswalks and bike lanes. New lighting and landscaping upgrades were also added. Hero Square, in the heart of Fields Corner, became a larger plaza. It is a perfect spot to watch the annual Dot Day parade.

Did you know roughly 11000 people use the Fields Corner MBTA Red Line station daily? The neighborhood prioritizes cyclists and pedestrians.

The Municipal Building, built in 1874, showcases Victorian Gothic style. Designed by Boston’s first city architect, it’s a landmark. It has housed a police station, courthouse, and even a jail.

Fields Corner has evolved over the years. Brothers Enos and Isaac Field opened a store almost 200 years ago. Today, Fields Corner thrives with shops and restaurants. Many are owned by Vietnamese-Americans.

Interestingly, Fields Corner once had a higher density of businesses. Historic photos reveal two and three-story buildings that no longer exist. For instance, O’Keefe’s coffee bean shop and Wachter’s ice cream store once stood near Charles Street. Now, a beauty salon and parking lot occupy the space.

The Robinson block at Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street also has a past. Originally a wooden structure with a mansard roof, it’s now a two-story stucco building.

Fields Corner continues to evolve. Yet, its rich history and community spirit remain. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. As you explore Fields Corner, remember its journey. From the Field family to the bustling commercial district it is today. Fields Corner remains a true gem in Boston.
