Field Temple

From a neglected space to a sanctuary. That’s the story of Field Temple in Detroit. Field Temple isn’t your typical grand structure. It’s a unique outdoor sanctuary nestled in the heart of Detroit’s Poletown neighborhood at 5333 Elmwood Street. Field Temple embraces the natural world as its teacher. The rustling leaves, chirping birds, and towering trees provide the backdrop for meditation and reflection. Field Temple’s story began in 2019. The land, once filled with abandoned houses and illegal dumping, was overgrown and forgotten. But amidst the decay, nature persisted. Trees grew tall, and birds sang their melodies. A vision took root to transform this neglected space into a place of healing and tranquility. With a grant from Detroit Future City, the transformation began. Dumpsters were filled, trees were trimmed, and native plants were introduced. Paths were created, and a unique watering system was devised using a trailer and water tote. Field Temple started offering open-air Sunday meditations at 10 am. The practice is rooted in Zen Buddhism from the Korean tradition. The meditations consist of two twenty-minute sessions, punctuated by the chanting of the Three Refuges and the ringing of a bell. A dharma talk and tea follow the meditation. Field Temple’s commitment extends beyond its boundaries. They are actively involved in community meetings and spread the word about their work through flyers and invitations. They envision more signage, tree identification markers, and public meditation classes in the future. The journey of Field Temple is a testament to the power of community and the resilience of nature. It demonstrates how a neglected space can be transformed into a sanctuary for meditation, reflection, and connection with the natural world. Field Temple continues to evolve and grow, offering a unique experience for all who seek solace and connection in the heart of Detroit.
