Did you know that a hub of interdisciplinary scientific exploration thrives right here? This is the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, or FIAS. Founded in 2003, FIAS is dedicated to basic theoretical research. Its home is on the Frankfurt-Riedberg campus of Goethe University.

FIAS operates as a unique bridge. It unites theorists from diverse scientific fields. Biology, chemistry, neuroscience, physics, mathematics, and computer science converge here. The goal is to foster a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment.

The Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies serves as a superstructure. It brings together research activities from Goethe University and neighboring centers. These include the Center for Scientific Computing and the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics. This bundling strengthens research efforts.

But why was FIAS created? Frankfurt boasts many labs renowned for experimental research. These labs focus on neurobiology, brain research, and heavy-ion physics. Despite potential connections, collaboration between disciplines was limited. Theoretical research risked falling behind. FIAS was founded to address this gap. It promotes cutting-edge research across multiple fields.

FIAS’s mission is clear. It aims to tackle complex scientific challenges through simulations and theories. This provides a foundation for addressing modern issues. The institute operates as a non-profit, collaborating with Goethe University and other institutions.

Research at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies is organized into three key areas. There are Theoretical Natural Sciences, Computer Sciences and AI Systems, plus Life and Neurosciences.

Theoretical Natural Sciences seeks understanding through equations. It reduces phenomena to basic principles. Computer Sciences utilizes supercomputers. They simulate complex processes and analyze vast datasets. Life and Neurosciences emphasize mathematical approaches in biology. FIAS recognizes the need for theory and simulation in the life sciences.

Let’s talk a bit about the history of FIAS. Walter Greiner and Wolf Singer established the institute in 2003. FIAS moved into its first premises on the Bockenheim Campus. The Frankfurt International Graduate School for Science started. In 2008, FIAS was officially registered as a foundation. Later, it moved to the Riedberg campus. In 2011, it found its permanent home at Ruth-Moufang-Straße 1.

Flat hierarchies are key to FIAS’s success. The Scientific Director and Foundation Board manage the institute. A Scientific Advisory Board and Faculty provide guidance. Research groups, each led by a Fellow, drive scientific progress. Fellows set priorities and train the next generation.

FIAS maintains close ties with Goethe University. The university president serves on the FIAS board. Many fellows are also professors at Goethe University. Young researchers represent about half of the scientists at FIAS. This focus ensures a vibrant future for scientific discovery.

As you leave the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies, remember its commitment. FIAS is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and groundbreaking research. It strives to solve complex scientific challenges. Its impact extends far beyond these walls.
