Over a thousand exhibits Wow. That’s what greets you at the entrance to the Feuerwehrmuseum Lueneburg. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a journey through over 160 years of firefighting history. Right here in Lueneburg.

The Feuerwehrmuseum Lueneburg started small. It began in 1966. Two old hand-powered pumps were the initial collection. A few pieces of equipment were added. The modest display occupied a small space. It was housed in the old fire station on Kaufhausstrasse. Today that’s the Hotel Altes Kaufhaus.

The museum’s growth was phenomenal. The collection expanded. More and more artifacts were added. By 2007 the museum needed more space. A new building was constructed in Lise-Meitner-Strasse. A dedicated area was designed specifically for the museum. This allowed the entire collection to be displayed. The collection continues to grow. New exhibits arrive regularly.

One fascinating piece is a TLF 15/53 Magirus-Deutz. It’s a 1955 fire truck. Only ten of this model with its open pump station were ever made. This rare vehicle is quite a sight. Due to space constraints it is currently parked in the vehicle hall. It remains fully functional and roadworthy.

The Feuerwehrmuseum Lueneburg isn’t just about Lueneburg. It showcases firefighting equipment from across the Lueneburg district. This includes items from Amt Neuhaus. This area was separated after World War II and rejoined after reunification. The exhibits show how this separation affected the development of firefighting in the region. There is even a separate section dedicated to firefighting during the East German era.

The museum is run by dedicated volunteer firefighters. Mostly retired firefighters. Appointments are necessary for visits. This allows for guided tours. Public access is limited to special events. Events include the Open House Day and the Night of Museums. You can easily arrange a private tour. Just call ahead and make a reservation. You can even visit outside of normal fire station hours.

The Feuerwehrmuseum Lueneburg is a true treasure. It is a testament to the dedication and history of firefighting in Lueneburg. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in fire history. It is a captivating tribute to the brave men and women of Lueneburg’s fire brigade. The museum’s dedication is evident. The collection is a valuable historical record. This museum is a hidden gem.
