For ten days, the Festwiese Oberkassel pulsates with the energy of the Rheinkirmes, formerly known as the “Größte Kirmes am Rhein,” meaning the largest fair on the Rhine. Now officially called the Rheinkirmes, it traces its roots back to 1435, a blend of two celebrations: the feast of the city’s patron saint, Apollinaris of Ravenna, and the consecration festival of the Basilica of St. Lambertus. Picture this: It’s 1901. The Rheinkirmes finds its permanent home here on the Festwiese Oberkassel, its bustling activity mirrored in the flowing Rhine.
