The November pogroms of 1938 cast a dark shadow. Hundreds of Jewish citizens were held here before deportation. A plaque remembers this tragedy. A fire in 1940 caused severe damage. Allied bombing during World War II further damaged it. After the war many wanted to demolish the Festhalle. Frankfurt citizens and Mayor Walter Kolb saved it. Make shift repairs began.

Led Zeppelin were the first rock band to play here. In the 1980s major renovations included installing air conditioning. The Festhalle has hosted countless concerts. Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead played here. The MTV Europe Music Awards were held here in 2001 and 2012. Rush recorded a live DVD here in 2004. The Festhalle celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. Recent renovations restored original gold leaf details. The exterior was repainted a bright ochre. The Festhalle hosted the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier draw. Even a planned Roger Waters concert faced controversy but eventually went ahead.
