Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday Neuallermöhe was just another growing residential area? Yet here stands Feste Burg e.V., an architectural statement. It’s more than just a building. It’s a story of faith, community, and change.

Feste Burg e.V. emerged in 2001. Architect Christine Edmaier envisioned an ecumenical center. This was a move away from Neuallermöhe’s postmodern style. The building embraces the clarity of the early 2000s.

Notice how the building juts out from the earth. Its green roof blends with the landscape. Glass surfaces open towards the nearby lake. Fieldstones from the area clad the exterior walls. Instead of a traditional steeple, a bell is mounted on the exterior wall.

Initially, Feste Burg e.V. aimed to unite two denominations under one roof. For five years, this vision held true. However, in 2006, the Roman Catholic community withdrew. The responsibility fell solely to the Protestants.

Recently, the Protestants also moved out of this once ecumenical project. The building has been “returned to the church district.” There are no more community activities planned here. The future of this relatively young building is uncertain.

Imagine the discussions held within these walls. Think of the hopes invested in this ecumenical endeavor. Feste Burg e.V. is a symbol of changing times. It highlights the evolving nature of community and faith.

The story of Feste Burg e.V. reminds us that even the most well-intentioned projects can face unforeseen challenges. Its architectural design reflects a specific moment in time. Its history reflects a community’s journey. Though its future is uncertain, its story remains a part of Hamburg-Neuallermöhe.
