Have you noticed the towering structure before you? This is the Fernandobelisk Statue. It is not just a statue. It is a symbol of community spirit in the San Fernando Valley.

The Fernandobelisk Statue has an interesting story. It starts with the Fernando Award Inc. This group formed in 1958. Its goal was to honor those who improved life in the San Fernando Valley.

In 1963, the organization erected a life-size bronze statue. This statue paid tribute to the Valley’s first settlers. It stood in the Van Nuys Civic Center.

As the Valley grew westward the statue became less visible. It also faced increased maintenance problems. There was even talk of moving it.

David Fleming was past president of the Fernando Award Inc. He said homeowner and civic groups were upset about moving the original statue. So they decided to create a new one.

The new Fernandobelisk is in Warner Park. It is a 19-foot bronze and marble obelisk. A bas relief of a Native American adorns all four sides. A plaque lists past award recipients.

Mayor Richard Riordan attended the unveiling. It took place next to the park’s Lou Bredlow Pavilion. Attorney Lee Kanon Alpert is president of Fernando Award Inc. He noted that the floodlit obelisk resembles the Washington Monument at night.

Alpert said the light symbolizes the volunteers’ contributions. The Fernandobelisk is truly a monument to volunteerism. The Fernandobelisk is more than just art. It represents the heart of the San Fernando Valley. It honors those who dedicate themselves to making our community a better place. Take a moment to appreciate the Fernandobelisk Statue. Think about the spirit of volunteerism it embodies.
