Hidden within Villeneuve-d’Ascq, the Ferme du Héron whispers tales of centuries past. The Ferme du Héron wasn’t always known by this name. It has seen many names throughout its long history. It wasn’t until the 1980s that it became the “Heron Farm”. Before that, wealthy families owned the land. They didn’t work the fields themselves. Instead, tenant farmers cultivated the land, a common practice in the region. The Ferme du Héron sits on land that was once part of a larger estate. The estate was acquired by the state in 1970 as part of the creation of Villeneuve-d’Ascq new town. It wasn’t directly given to the city. The state entrusted the farm to a public development agency in 1977. Today, the Ferme du Héron is owned by the Lille Metropole urban community. Villeneuve-d’Ascq manages it. The original structure forms a large rectangle, once encircled by moats flowing into the Marque River. The four wings, mainly brick, show the marks of time and transformation. They embrace a partially paved courtyard. The entrance, a porch topped by a second story, leads into the west wing. This area once housed the living quarters. The north wing now holds offices. The old stable, once home to farm animals, has been repurposed. It now contains aquariums. These tanks offer a glimpse into the aquatic life of the surrounding lakes. The east wing boasts a grand barn, its long sides pierced by large carriage doors. Its roof, covered in Flemish pannes tiles, rests upon a sturdy elm and poplar frame. The south wing, a more recent addition, was entirely rebuilt in 1994. It now houses a large, versatile hall. This space hosts a variety of events. The Ferme du Héron is more than just a historical landmark. It’s a vibrant center for education and sustainability. The farm houses municipal services for environmental education and sustainable development. It’s also home to the Regional Center for Genetic Resources and a branch of the Regional Natural Area. Several associations dedicated to nature and astronomy call the farm home. Around the farm, you’ll find a natural garden, a medicinal plant garden, an educational vegetable garden, a pollen garden, and a beekeeping school. The Ferme du Héron bridges the past and the future. It honors its agricultural heritage while embracing its role as a hub for environmental awareness.
