Consider this: A dedicated city director, Ferdinand Haltenhoff, rests eternally in this very spot. He significantly shaped Hanover during his tenure. Let’s delve into the life and legacy of Ferdinand Haltenhoff.

Ferdinand Haltenhoff was born on February 12, 1836, in Wahrenholz. He died on September 7, 1891, in Heidelberg. Haltenhoff served as city director of Hanover from 1882 to 1891. He was a judge and administrative lawyer.

Haltenhoff studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg and Göttingen. He became active in the Corps Vandalia Heidelberg in 1856. From 1860 to 1864, he was an auditor at courts in Bleckede, Burgwedel, and Hanover. He then worked as a lawyer and notary in Hameln. In 1877, he became a judge in Bremervörde.

In 1878, Haltenhoff became a senator in Hanover. After Johann Carl Hermann Rasch died, he was elected city director in the autumn of 1882 by one vote.

Many important developments happened during Ferdinand Haltenhoff’s time in office. These included the construction of the Stöcken city cemetery, the market hall, the electricity plant, and the Kestner Museum. Herrenhausen, Hainholz, List, and Vahrenwald were incorporated into Hanover. This increased the population from 125,000 to 180,000.

Beyond his role as city director, Ferdinand Haltenhoff was active in regional politics. From 1885, he served as vice president of the Provinziallandtag. In 1890, he became a member of the Prussian House of Lords.

Tragically, Ferdinand Haltenhoff died at the age of 55. He was on his way back to Hanover from Montreux. His honorary grave is located here at the Stadtfriedhof Engesohde. In 1892, a street in Hanover’s Nordstadt was named after him.

Haltenhoff’s successor as city director of Hanover was Heinrich Tramm. Henricus Haltenhoff, a grand-nephew of Ferdinand Haltenhoff, also became mayor of Frankfurt, Cottbus, and Hanover.

Think about the impact Ferdinand Haltenhoff had on Hanover. His efforts helped transform the city into a modern urban center. His commitment to progress and development is evident in the landmarks and districts that emerged during his leadership. He left a lasting legacy on Hanover.
