Chugga chugga chugga. That’s the sound of history rolling into view. Welcome to the Feldbahn-Museum 500 eV in Nuremberg. This isn’t your average museum. This is a living testament to the small-gauge railways that once powered industries across Germany.

The Feldbahn-Museum 500 eV is a unique place. It houses the largest collection of 500 mm gauge railways in Germany. These aren’t your grand passenger trains. These are the workhorses the unsung heroes of industry. They hauled clay in brickworks. They transported stone from quarries. They even served the needs of peat works paper factories and large nurseries.

Imagine the sheer dedication it took to amass this collection. Karlheinz Rohrwild a man with a passion for these miniature marvels spent his life building this museum. He painstakingly gathered locomotives and wagons. He carefully pieced together a history. Sadly he died in 2005 on the museum’s grounds. His legacy however lives on.

His son continues his work. The museum boasts an impressive collection. There are over 60 locomotives including a rare compressed-air locomotive from coal mining. There is a gasoline locomotive from the 1920s possibly the oldest running field railway locomotive in Bavaria. There are also 44 diesel locomotives and many more. The collection also includes over 400 cars including 151 mine cars. These can be arranged into 34 different train sets.

The museum isn’t just a static display. You can see these machines in action. On a half kilometer track more than 25 switches were installed. There are two Y-switches a 3-way switch 22 normal switches a crossing and six turntables. The trains rumble along this network showcasing the technology of yesteryear. You can almost feel the earth tremble under their wheels. You can almost hear the whispers of generations of workers.

The Feldbahn-Museum 500 eV is more than just a collection of trains. It’s a journey through time. It’s a glimpse into a forgotten era of industry. It’s a celebration of ingenuity perseverance and the human spirit. So take your time. Explore the museum. Let the chugga chugga chugga transport you to another time.
