Picture a marble fountain. It sits proudly in Largo de Santa Luzia. Four taps point towards the island’s cardinal directions. Legend says it’s a royal gift from Lisbon. A 19th-century present initially intended for Ponta Delgada. It later found its home in Feteiras.

This is Feiteiras a parish nestled in the Azores. It’s a place of rich history and vibrant culture. It started as a coastal settlement Porto dos Bateis. The name means ‘port of the great carracks’. This refers to the building of a large sailing ship. The lowlands proved unsuitable. Settlers moved uphill. They followed the path of a developing roadway.

Feteiras got its name from the abundance of ferns. They covered the high and low pasturelands. Father Lopez da Luz noted this. He wrote about the parish of Santa Luzia das Feteiras. This parish existed long before the 16th century. But the church wasn’t dedicated to Santa Luzia. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The original church dedicated to Santa Luzia was in ruins by the 16th century.

By the 19th century Feiteiras boasted around 860 people. The church of Nossa Senhora da Guadalupe was renovated. It was renamed Santa Luzia. The old statue was moved to the new church. By the 20th century the population exceeded 1000.

Feiteiras’s economy thrives on agriculture and animal husbandry. There’s even a meat processing factory. Small fishing ports support local fishermen. Two ports serve the area. One old one near the lookout. The other more recent closer to Canada do Porto.

Feteiras isn’t just about work. It’s alive with festivals. The Santissmo Sacramento celebrations happen the first Sunday of September. December brings the patron saint’s feast. Throughout summer Holy Spirit rituals fill the air. Ox-driven carts carry participants. Sweet bread and wine are shared. The traditional crowning takes place. A Massa Sovada baking competition adds to the festive spirit. The Tradicional Churrasco de Sao Pedro another important event. It showcases local food and drink.

Feteiras. A blend of history nature and community. Its a place where legends live and traditions are celebrated. A place you won’t soon forget.
