The Federal Territory National Department of Culture and Arts wasn’t always located here. Its story begins much earlier. In 1953 a Cultural Division formed under the Ministry of Social Welfare. This division’s purpose was to preserve and promote Malaysian culture. The department evolved over the years shifting between ministries. It was finally upgraded to its current status on March 22 2005.
Its history is deeply intertwined with the history of this very building. Originally the Victoria Institution a British-era school the building opened in 1894. Funds for its construction came from various sources including a contribution from Sultan Abdul Samad Shah of Selangor. The school eventually moved and the building housed other institutions including the Kuala Lumpur Technical College. However it became a central location for artistic activities especially theater and dance in the 1970s and 80s. Many famous Malaysian artists honed their skills here.
A devastating fire in 1999 nearly destroyed the building. However its historical importance ensured its reconstruction. This was a significant investment in preserving Malaysia’s artistic legacy. Rebuilt in 2005 at a cost of over RM7 million the building now stands as a symbol of cultural resilience.
