“Low-security” doesn’t always mean low-profile. The Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, stands here. It houses male inmates. This federal prison operates under the Federal Bureau of Prisons. That is a division of the United States Department of Justice.
FCI Englewood also includes an administrative detention center. There is also a satellite prison camp for minimum-security offenders. FCI Englewood sits in unincorporated Jefferson County. It is near Bow Mar, Colorado. You will find it off U.S. Route 285 and Kipling Street. That’s about 10 miles southwest of Downtown Denver.
Oddly enough, FCI Englewood gets its name from the city of Englewood. However, it’s not actually located in Englewood. It has a Littleton mailing address, but it isn’t in Littleton either.
Let’s talk about some incidents at the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood. On April 2, 2012, a white powdery substance caused a lockdown. The substance was in an envelope addressed to an inmate. Turns out it was harmless.
Then, on December 21, 2018, an inmate named Alan May drove off in a vehicle. He was gone for quite a while. He wasn’t caught until August 3, 2023.
FCI Englewood has housed some notable people. Jared Fogle, the former Subway spokesperson, served time here. He was convicted of child pornography charges. Eric Franklin Rosser who was a keyboardist for John Mellencamp also served time here. He pleaded guilty to watching child pornography. Jan Rouven Fuechtener, a magician, was convicted on child pornography charges as well.
Michael Slager, the police officer who killed Walter Scott, also spent time at FCI Englewood. Former Sheriff of Orange County Mike Carona was released to a halfway house. Environmental activist Tim DeChristopher served a 2-year sentence here.
Admiral Robert Gilbeau lied to investigators. He pocketed kickbacks. Jeffrey Skilling committed fraud related to Enron. Jeffrey Alexander Sterling was a former CIA employee. He was convicted under the Espionage Act. Walter Lee Williams, a former FBI Ten Most Wanted fugitive, was also housed here.
Rod Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, had his sentence commuted. Rafael Cárdenas Vela, a member of the Gulf Cartel, pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. Jake Angeli, known as the QAnon Shaman, was held here for pre-trial purposes. Eric Justin Toth, a former teacher, was convicted of child pornography production. Thomas Lane, one of the police officers involved in George Floyd’s death, also served time.
The Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood opened in 1938. It is a low-security facility with a minimum-security prison camp. The inmate population is around 1,034.
