Rumble. That’s the sound of history. The FCA Mack Avenue Engine Plant. Right before you stands a testament to Detroit’s automotive legacy. A place where innovation roared to life.

The FCA Mack Avenue Engine Plant isn’t just a factory. It’s a living story. Its roots trace back to 1916. The Michigan Stamping Company built the original factory. It produced car bodies for Ford and Plymouth. Chrysler acquired the plant in 1953. It continued stamping parts for nearby plants. But by 1979 Chrysler closed the outdated factory. It became a derelict brownfield. The city of Detroit took over in 1982. Unable to revive it they returned it to Chrysler.

Chrysler’s transformation began in 1990. They cleaned and demolished the old plant. A new factory rose from the ashes. This “New Mack” became the birthplace of the legendary Dodge Viper from 1992 to 1995. Then in 1998 it was converted into an engine plant. Mack Engine II expanded the plant in 1999. It produced millions of engines for years.

A significant turning point came in April 2013. Mack Engine I produced its last PowerTech V8. Then it was retooled to produce the Pentastar V6 engine. A $197 million investment secured its future.

Then came the big announcement. In December 2018 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced a massive change. The Mack Avenue Engine Complex would become a vehicle assembly plant again. The next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee would be built here. Construction began in 2019. The plant opened in 2021. Over 3850 new jobs were created.

Today this plant is a state-of-the-art facility. Its massive floor space covers almost 3 million square feet. It’s a place where innovation and American manufacturing power meet. The FCA Mack Avenue Engine Plant isn’t just a factory. It’s a symbol of Detroit’s resilience its spirit of reinvention and its unwavering commitment to automotive excellence. A story that continues to unfold.
