The transformation of Fauler See/Markendorfer Wald began after World War II. The land, previously used for military purposes, was left untouched. Nature, resilient and opportunistic, began to reclaim its territory. A mixed oak forest emerged, gradually replacing the Kiefer trees, creating the diverse habitat we see today. The Fauler See itself, a 4-hectare natural eutrophic lake, sits at the heart of this protected area.
