Beneath the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Father Giorgio Triangle rests. A small park yes but steeped in history. This quiet triangular space honors Captain Edward J Giorgio. A local priest and marching band founder he became an Army chaplain during World War II.

Father Giorgio wasn’t just any priest. He was beloved. He nurtured the youth of Williamsburg. He encouraged them to attend Mass. He founded the award-winning Mt Carmel Cadet Corps a vibrant marching band. Think of the lively sounds of that band echoing through the streets.

His dedication extended beyond his parish. He served as a chaplain in the US Army. In Europe he suffered a leg injury requiring amputation. Tragically he died of blood poisoning in 1946 at just 36. He’s buried in Holy Cross Cemetery.

But his legacy lives on. Three months after his death the Catholic War Veterans formed the Father Edward J Giorgio Post 689. In 1951 they dedicated a plaque. It read “His greatest love was God His greatest devotion humanity His greatest heritage a living inspiration to us all”. A powerful tribute.

This small triangle wasn’t always a park. In 1946 the city acquired the cobblestone site. It became parkland the same year as the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway’s construction began. The BQE is an imposing presence. The beech trees at each corner of Father Giorgio Triangle offer some needed respite. They remind us of nature’s resilience.

A shiny graphite plaque replaced the original bronze one stolen in 2008. Father Giorgio is still remembered. The American flag flutters proudly above the triangle. It’s a fitting homage to his service to country and community. So next time you see this small triangle in Williamsburg remember Father Giorgio’s life. Remember his dedication and his enduring spirit. He is a testament to faith service and unwavering commitment. His story is woven into the very fabric of this place.
