Did you ever hear of an atomic bomb disguised as a baby? Right here in Prospect Park, meet Fat Boy. Fat Boy isn’t your typical cherubic sculpture. This oversized head, nearly 10 feet tall, is the brainchild of Romanian artist Leonard Ursachi. He calls it a “bunker”, a recurring theme in his work. Ursachi has dotted New York City parks with these bunkers, crafted from everything from turkey feathers to ceramic tiles. This one, however, stands out. It’s his first bunker shaped like a head. Made of styrofoam and covered in a weatherproof material, Fat Boy sits on the lawn of Litchfield Villa. The sculpture’s plump cheeks and embedded mirrors might initially bring to mind Renaissance putti, those symbols of joy and abandon often seen in classical art. But look closer. The title “Fat Boy” carries a darker meaning, referencing the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki in World War II. This duality, Eros and war, is intentional. Ursachi imbues his bunkers with a sense of both refuge and conflict, a longing for home amidst the shadows of war. Fat Boy made his debut at the Ringling Museum in Florida before finding a temporary home here in Brooklyn. It’s a thought-provoking piece. Ursachi’s art has been praised by critics for its sensitivity and intelligence. Come, take a moment. Reflect on the duality of this curious sculpture, Fat Boy. Consider the complexities of human nature, the interplay between innocence and destruction. Let Fat Boy’s enigmatic gaze draw you into a conversation about art, history, and the enduring power of symbolism.
