Can you hear the crashing waves against the rocks? The Farol de Leça, also known as the Farol da Boa Nova, stands tall against the elements. It’s a beacon for ships navigating the waters between the Ave and Douro rivers. This lighthouse, the second tallest in all of Portugal, has been guiding ships safely since 1927. Imagine the relief of sailors seeing its light after a long journey. This lighthouse originally flashed a sequence of three white flashes every 15 seconds. That pattern, visible for 43 miles, warned ships away from the rocky coastline. Today the Farol de Leça still uses a three-flash pattern, but with a 14-second interval and a range of 28 nautical miles. The lighthouse we see today replaced a smaller, experimental light called the Farolim da Boa Nova. That earlier lighthouse, active for a decade, stood closer to the charming Capela da Boa Nova. Look closely and you can still see remnants of its stone foundation nearby. In 1962, this grand lighthouse became even more important. It took on the crucial role of remotely controlling other vital lights along the coast. The Farol de Leça became the heart of Portugal’s first network of remotely controlled lighthouses, marking a turning point in maritime navigation. Now, as you gaze upon this impressive structure, remember the Farol de Leça’s legacy. It represents more than just a navigational tool. It signifies safety, innovation, and a connection to Portugal’s rich maritime history.
