Imagine a time when countless fishermen lost their lives navigating the treacherous sandbanks near Póvoa de Varzim. This is where the story of Farol da Lapa begins. This lighthouse stands not as a solitary sentinel but as part of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa. It is a testament to the deep devotion the local fishermen held for this small temple.
The first historical mention of a light in this town dates back to the 16th century. It was a simple signal, a guiding star for sailors. This light was originally located in Lugar do Facho where the Lapa Church was later built in 1770. During the Portuguese Civil War, the light found a temporary home within the town’s fortress.
Before the current structure existed, the light was perched atop an iron frame. This early version resembled a crane tower. It stood in the Lapa churchyard. Its purpose was to provide alignment. This alignment indicated the correct path for ships to safely navigate the sandbank.
The Royal Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Assunção constructed the current lighthouse. They integrated it into the church. This was due to the strong faith of the Povoan fishermen. The Farol da Lapa served as a beacon. It was a guide especially important to the fishermen.
In 1892, the Farol da Lapa gained new significance. It became the first light in the Lapa-Regufe alignment. This alignment marked the Póvoa Bay slope. By aligning the lights of Farol da Lapa and Farol de Regufe, fishermen could determine their position. This position was in the safe corridor. It lay between underwater rocks. This allowed them to safely cross the sandbank. Many lives had been lost there over generations. The lighthouse was only activated when sea conditions made crossing the bar perilous.
However, progress brought change. In the 1960s, the Farol da Lapa was deactivated. The construction of new breakwaters had rendered the alignment obsolete.
Yet, the story doesn’t end there. In August 2016, the lighthouse was revived and reactivated alongside the church. A door, hidden since the 17th century, was rediscovered. This door now serves as the entrance to the lighthouse. Inside, uneven stony steps lead to sightseeing opportunities.
There’s also a replica of the original lantern on the rear facade of the church. It faces the beach. The lantern houses an image of Nossa Senhora da Lapa. It also has a panel commemorating the tragedy of February 1892. This tragedy deeply affected the fishermen of Póvoa de Varzim.
Farol da Lapa stands as a symbol. It represents faith, guidance, and the enduring spirit of a community deeply connected to the sea.
