On a cliff overlooking the mesmerizing Tyrrhenian Sea stands the Faro di Capo Gallo. It’s a beacon of history, a sentinel guarding the entrance to the Gulf of Palermo. The Faro di Capo Gallo isn’t just a lighthouse. It’s a story etched in stone and light, dating back to 1854. Imagine the scene then: workers hauling materials, shaping the concrete base and cylindrical tower. The lighthouse, a mere 7 meters tall, stands proudly with its balcony and lantern, attached to the keeper’s house. This keeper’s house, sadly, fell into disrepair after the lighthouse became automated. But there’s hope. The Municipality of Palermo envisions a future where the Faro di Capo Gallo transforms into a museum, preserving its history within the Capo Gallo Nature Reserve. The Faro di Capo Gallo isn’t just a relic of the past. It’s an active lighthouse, its white tower and grey metallic lantern dome gleaming under the Sicilian sun. The lantern, perched 40 meters above the sea, flashes its distinct pattern: two long white flashes every 15 seconds. This light, a guiding star for mariners, reaches an impressive 16 nautical miles. The Marina Militare, the Italian Navy, ensures its operation, identifying it as 3198 E.F. The Faro di Capo Gallo stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our connection to the sea.
