Erected in 1860, it predates every other structure in Punta del Este. Originally intended for Isla de Lobos in 1858, fate intervened. The lighthouse found its true home on the peninsula a couple of years later, guiding ships through the confluence of the Atlantic and the Río de la Plata. Imagine, in 1860, Tomás de Libarona overseeing its construction. The walls rose, not from ordinary stone, but from a unique blend of volcanic ash called “tierra roma,” imported all the way from Italy. This gave the Faro de Punta del Este remarkable durability, allowing it to withstand the relentless coastal elements for over a century. The tower stretches 24.90 meters high, culminating in a light 44 meters above sea level. Reaching the lantern room requires a climb up 150 steps, a pilgrimage undertaken by countless visitors over the years. The lighting system, a marvel of 19th-century engineering imported from France, originally used acetylene gas as a backup. Now electric, the light still flashes its distinctive pattern: two beams every eight seconds, visible for 18 nautical miles. In 1923, the Faro de Punta del Este underwent a transformation. Buildings were added to house the lighthouse keepers and their families, including a kitchen and dining area, creating a small community around the beacon. For decades, the lighthouse was a beloved attraction. Tourists would ascend the tower, not just for the breathtaking view but to sign the guestbook, a tradition started in 1905. Imagine the stories etched within its pages. Sadly, public access is now restricted, except on Heritage Day in October, when the tower opens its doors once more.
