The salty wind whispers secrets. It speaks of shipwrecks and daring rescues near the Faro de los Ahorcados. This lighthouse stands guard at the southernmost tip of Es Penjats islet a small island off Ibiza.

The Faro de los Ahorcados or Far des Penjats in the local Ibicencan language isn’t just a navigational beacon. It’s a silent witness to centuries of maritime history. Its stark white and black stripes pierce the azure sky. It has watched countless vessels navigate the treacherous waters of Es Freus the strait separating Ibiza and Formentera.

Built between 1854 and 1856 the lighthouse wasn’t always this tall. Initially its tower was 227 meters. But the need for better visibility in these dangerous waters led to an increase in height to 2714 meters. This ensured the light could be seen up to 15 nautical miles.

The lighthouse’s name translates to “Lighthouse of the Hanged Men”. Legend speaks of a gallows here where condemned pirates met their fate. Their bodies were left to dangle a gruesome warning to any who dared to sail these waters. A tale by Juan Villangómez Llobet adds intrigue. He tells of seven mysterious hangings during a storm when the executioner couldn’t reach the islet.

Tragedy also struck the lighthouse itself in 1881. Two brave keepers died trying to rescue the crew of the British steamer Flaminian. Their sacrifice highlights the perilous nature of this location and the bravery of its keepers.

In 1929 the Faro de los Ahorcados was modernized. Automation ended the era of resident keepers. The lighthouse now shines its beam remotely a testament to technological advancements.

The Faro de los Ahorcados is more than just a navigational aid. It embodies the rich maritime heritage of the Balearic Islands. Its silhouette a symbol of the human spirit. A beacon of hope warning of danger. A sentinel of a rich and complex past. It continues to stand firm against wind and wave a testament to both human ingenuity and the enduring power of legend.
