Behold Hercules Farnese. This marble giant stands before you. He embodies strength and weariness.

The Farnese Hercules is not just any statue. It’s a copy of an ancient Greek bronze by Lysippos. Lysippos created it in the fourth century BC. The original was lost. Crusaders melted it down in 1205.

This copy was made for the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. The baths were dedicated in 216 AD. The statue was rediscovered in 1546. Now, it resides in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

Look closely. Hercules leans on his club. The skin of the Nemean lion drapes over it. This was his first labor. He holds golden apples behind his back. These are from the Hesperides. It was one of his last tasks.

The statue found its way into Cardinal Alessandro Farnese’s collection. He was Pope Paul III’s grandson. It stood in Palazzo Farnese in Rome for generations. Frescoes depicted Hercules’ feats around it. Annibale Carracci and his studio created them in the 1590s.

In 1787, the Farnese collection moved to Naples. Now, it is displayed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale.

The sculpture has been reassembled over time. The head was found in a well. Guglielmo della Porta bought it for Farnese. Della Porta made legs for the statue. Michelangelo said they were so good they should stay. When the original legs were found they were not put back on until 1787.

Goethe saw the statue with both sets of legs. He thought the original legs were far better.

Hercules is in a rare moment of rest. He leans on his club. It is covered with the Nemean lion’s pelt. He hides the apples of the Hesperides. Many engravings spread the statue’s fame.

Hendrik Goltzius sketched the statue in 1590. He emphasized its muscles. Rubens also sketched the statue. Prints were the only way to share the image back then.

People admired the sculpture from the start. Some later criticized its exaggerated muscles. Napoleon wanted it for his museum in Paris. But it never made it.

The Resting Herakles is here in the Hermitage. It is one of many ancient copies. Another coarser copy stood in Palazzo Farnese. One in Palazzo Pitti has a fake inscription.

Many copies appeared in Europe’s gardens. One colossal version stands in Kassel. André Le Nôtre put a gilded version at Vaux-le-Vicomte. There is a copy at the Palace of Versailles. Another is at Blair Castle in Scotland. Wealthy collectors had bronze replicas.

This Farnese Hercules is more than just a statue. It’s a symbol of strength, history, and art. It connects us to the ancient world.
