Why did the Farmington Hills Church of Christ find a new home in a former Lutheran church? The Farmington Hills Church of Christ, once the first Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ) congregation in Michigan, has a fascinating story of growth and resilience. Established in 1974, the Detroit congregation witnessed the birth of two more congregations in Michigan (Sterling Heights and Grand Rapids). It also saw members establish gatherings in Cleveland, Ohio, and Windsor, Canada. By 2014, the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church faced dwindling membership. They sold their Farmington Hills property to the burgeoning Church Of Christ. This acquisition symbolized not just the INC’s expansion but also a shift in the religious landscape. The renovated 250-seater worship building, located at 35300 West Eight Mile Road, reopened its doors on September 1, 2018. This marked a significant milestone for the Farmington Hills Church of Christ. The dedication service was part of a larger series led by Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, the Executive Minister. These services revitalized formerly abandoned worship buildings across America, from Killeen, Texas, to Ewa Beach, Hawaii. The Farmington Hills Church of Christ stands as a testament to the INC’s global expansion. In 2018 alone, over 100 houses of worship were dedicated worldwide, averaging three new buildings per week. This rapid growth is fueled by voluntary contributions from members globally. The church incorporates local cultural elements and respects the building’s history while maintaining the distinctive architectural style of INC chapels worldwide. Wilfred Santos, District Minister of 34 congregations in the Northern Midwest, reflected on the church’s journey. He noted the closure of many businesses and religious institutions in Detroit over the past four decades. Yet, the Farmington Hills Church of Christ thrives. Its presence demonstrates the enduring strength and growth of the Iglesia Ni Cristo in Detroit.
