Hidden in plain sight, Faraday House stands as a testament to Manchester’s scientific legacy. Faraday House isn’t just another building. It was once the beating heart of the University of Manchester’s chemistry department. Designed by Harry Fairhurst, of the renowned Manchester firm H.S. Fairhurst & Son, Faraday House opened its doors in 1967. Built by J. Gerrard & Sons, it served as the home of chemistry until 2007. Many researchers who focused on biological chemistry then moved to the nearby Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre. The spirit of alchemy lingers within these walls. Faraday House held a vibrant mural, “The Alchemist’s Elements,” created by Hans Tisdall in 1967. This artwork, composed of colorful glass, ceramic, and marble tesserae, was a captivating blend of abstract shapes. The mural was carefully restored by The Mosaic Restoration Company and relocated to the Schuster Building. It now faces another Tisdall mural on the Chemist Building, a fitting tribute to the building’s scientific past. Sadly, as part of the North Campus closure, Faraday House itself was closed in 2015 and partially demolished in 2016. Even in its altered state, Faraday House whispers stories of discovery and innovation.
