Nestled within Herăstrău Park, the Fântâna Modura whispers a tale of resilience. The Fântâna Modura isn’t just a statue; it’s a symbol of Romanian heritage, resurrected from the ashes of history. The original Fântâna Modura, crafted by Constantin Baraschi in 1939, graced this park during the “Month of Bucharest” exhibition. Imagine a bronze maiden in traditional Romanian attire, a pitcher balanced gracefully on her shoulder. She stands within a stone basin, adorned with ceramic tiles, a serene presence amidst the park’s greenery. The Fântâna Modura is more than just a pretty face. It’s tied to a fascinating anecdote from King Carol II’s life. In 1930, his plane made an emergency landing. A young woman, whose last name was Mudura, offered him water from a clay jug. This act of kindness led her to Bucharest and even a spot on Romanian banknotes. The Fântâna Modura statue immortalizes this moment. This tranquil scene was shattered during the Stalinist era. The entire monument was demolished to make way for a statue of Stalin. The original Fântâna Modura was thought lost to time. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, the Fântâna Modura was reborn. Sculptor Ionel Stoicescu meticulously reconstructed it in 2005 using old photographs, fragments saved by writer Paul Everac, and even an original caryatid discovered in Bellu Cemetery. Incredibly, after the replica was installed, the original Modura statue was found in the same cemetery. This rediscovery added another layer to the Fântâna Modura’s story, a testament to its enduring spirit. Today, the Fântâna Modura serves as a popular meeting spot, affectionately nicknamed “La Oală” (The Pot). It stands as a reminder of Romania’s rich history and artistic heritage. The Fântâna Modura isn’t merely a monument; it is a survivor. It whispers tales of kindness, resilience, and the enduring power of art to transcend time.
