Rows of brick buildings stretch before you. This is Falkenried-Terrassen in Hamburg. A glimpse into Hamburg’s working-class past.

Built between 1890 and 1891 Falkenried-Terrassen offered affordable homes. These were for families working in nearby factories. Each building housed two-room apartments. These tiny apartments ranged from 32 to 46 square meters. Think cramped living quarters. Many children shared these spaces.

The architecture is unique. The buildings are 140 meters long. They are three stories high except for the end buildings. Five private streets run through the complex. This created a unique terraced effect hence the name. A typical Hamburg design for working-class neighborhoods. It followed the latest hygienic standards. Each apartment had its own toilet. There was access to public water and sewage. Good ventilation was another key feature. The buildings however were of simple construction. They were built as profitable investment properties.

World War II devastated the area. Bombing raids in 1941 and 1943 partially destroyed Falkenried-Terrassen. Some buildings were even demolished for an air raid shelter. Post-war plans threatened demolition. Residents formed a tenant initiative in 1973. Their determined fight saved the Falkenried-Terrassen. They worked tirelessly to keep their homes. In 1988 they formed a housing cooperative. This cooperative manages the apartments to this day.

Extensive renovations between 1992 and 1994 modernized the buildings. This secured their long-term future. Today the Falkenried-Terrassen stand as a testament to community resilience. It shows successful self-management. Since 2013 it enjoys protected status as a historic landmark. The Falkenried-Terrassen remains a vibrant community. It’s a significant part of Hamburg’s urban history. This unique neighborhood blends the past with the present. It shows how collective action can preserve important historical places.
