Painted dreams in concrete and color. That’s Gartenstadt Falkenberg. This isn’t just a place it is a statement. Today we explore Falkenberg in Berlin.

Falkenberg is a locality within Lichtenberg. It was once part of Hohenschönhausen until 2001. The place was first documented in 1370. Otto V, Duke of Bavaria, mentioned it. It joined Berlin in 1920 through the Greater Berlin Act.

Now, look around. Notice the colorful houses. These are the work of Bruno Taut. He was commissioned in 1912. The Berliner Spar- und Bauverein hired him. They planned 1,500 homes on 75 hectares. Only 128 dwellings were built because of the war.

Falkenberg earned a nickname Tuschkastensiedlung. This translates to paint box estate. Taut used bright colors to give each house individuality. This departs the place from normal architecture.

Also, note the gardens. Each apartment had one. These ranged from 135 to 600 square meters. Ludwig Lesser, a landscape architect, designed the gardens. His work added to the uniqueness of Falkenberg.

The garden city movement influenced Falkenberg. But it didn’t aim for self-sufficiency. Instead, it followed English terraced houses. These were combined with detached houses.

In 2008, Gartenstadt Falkenberg became a UNESCO World Heritage site. It joined other Berlin Modernism estates. This award highlights its architectural significance.

Falkenberg’s architecture and gardens create a special environment. It shows how design can shape community. Its story is one of innovation, resilience, and beauty. As you leave, remember the colors and the history. Falkenberg is more than just buildings. It is a living work of art.
