Established in 2014 the Faculty of Educational Science stands before you. Its history however stretches far beyond that date. Deep roots run through this institution. It’s a story of evolution a story of resilience. A story inextricably linked to the development of education in Hamburg.

Before the Faculty’s current form existed a long journey shaped its path. From its modest beginnings in the early 1900s as part of the Allgemeine Vorlesungswesen to its role in training teachers for higher schools and later elementary schools. Think of the thousands of students who passed through its doors. Their lives forever shaped by the lessons and insights gained within these walls.

The early years saw prominent figures like Ernst Meumann and William Stern shaping the field of educational science. Their work laid the foundation for generations to come. The 1920s and 30s witnessed a surge in student numbers. Growth was remarkable. Yet the shadow of the Nazi regime fell upon the institution. William Stern a pioneer in his field was dismissed. The subsequent years brought challenges and recovery.

After World War II the University reopened. Teacher training resumed. The Pedagogical Institute was founded. This focused on practical training for future teachers. The opening of a new building on Von-Melle-Park in 1959 marked a significant step. It was the first completed building on campus.

The student movements of the 1960s brought changes. The Ordinarien system was abolished. The Faculty evolved into a department. The introduction of a diploma program broadened the scope of studies. It allowed for university education in social educational and upbringing fields beyond traditional schooling. The Faculty continued to adapt. It expanded its offerings. In the 1990s it became one of the largest departments.

The early 2000s saw another restructuring. Departments were merged into faculties. The Faculty of Educational Science Psychology and Movement Science was created. The introduction of Bachelor’s and Master’s programs ushered in a new era. The Faculty then split again. The Faculty of Educational Science was independently established.

Today’s Faculty of Educational Science stands as a testament to its rich and complex history. It is a beacon of educational innovation. Its contributions to research and teaching have profoundly shaped the educational landscape of Hamburg and beyond. Its legacy is one of adaptation and progress. A constant evolution reflecting societal shifts.
