Ever wonder what two churches merging into one looks like? Here at Faith Lutheran Church of Vista, that very story unfolded. Faith Lutheran isn’t just one church’s history. It’s the intertwined narrative of two congregations coming together. While Faith Lutheran Church of Vista thrives today in Vista, its roots lie in a tale of two separate beginnings. These weren’t even in Vista! They were part of a larger Lutheran landscape, a tapestry of beliefs and communities woven across the country. One congregation, Advent Lutheran Church, started its journey in 1976 through door-to-door canvassing. Imagine those early days, the dedicated individuals spreading the word, building a community from scratch. Their first Christmas service was held at Living History Farms. They later established their church at 104th Street and University Avenue. Can you picture them holding services in a mall theater and Sunday school in the atrium? The other congregation, Messiah Lutheran Church, emerged from a different context. Formed by families who left Trinity Lutheran after a denominational vote, they sought a new spiritual home. Messiah eventually found a space near 86th Street and Hickman Road, adapting office condominiums into a place of worship. Now, fast forward to a Village Inn breakfast meeting on University Avenue. It’s 1984, and leaders from Advent and Messiah are contemplating a significant change. Could their two distinct communities become one? This led to a pivotal moment for both congregations. By August 1984, they voted overwhelmingly to merge. Faith Lutheran Church was born. A contest even decided the new church’s name. A couple from each congregation proposed the name “Faith,” winning a dinner with the ALC Bishop. In 1987, the dream of a new, shared building materialized. Members gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony, envisioning the structure that would house their unified faith. This building, the sanctuary we see today, stands as a testament to their shared vision. Faith Lutheran continued to evolve, transitioning from the American Lutheran Church (ALC) to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1988. Over the years, Faith Lutheran Church has added significant features. A baptismal font was installed in 1989, followed by the Eternal Light in 1990. The Dobson Pipe Organ, Opus 61, filled the sanctuary with music starting in 1993. The serene Memory Garden was dedicated in 1994, offering a place for remembrance and reflection. Even now, Faith Lutheran Church of Vista keeps growing.
