Founded in 1892 Faith Lutheran Church in Cambridge Massachusetts boasts a rich history. Initially known as The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Church it began with just 23 members. For over 17 years they met in rented halls. One notable location was Prospect Hall. This is now ImprovBoston.

Imagine Henning Jacobson. He was a theology student. He served as a missionary. He visited Swedish immigrants. He found them in apartments. He found them on the docks. He built a community. This community thrived for 125 years.

The church finally built its home at 311 Broadway in 1908. The cornerstone was laid that year. The building itself reflects the ingenuity of its founders. Many were shipbuilders. The interior’s dark wood is stunning. The crossbeams echo the interior of a ship. Congregants carved the pews the pulpit and the walls. They even bartered discarded soil for labor during the basement’s construction. A truly remarkable feat of community and craftsmanship.

In 1940 a significant change occurred. English services were introduced. This wasn’t about inclusivity initially. It aimed to engage the younger generation. Many were more comfortable with English. Regardless of its intention it transformed the church. It became a cosmopolitan community overnight.

Today Faith Lutheran Church isn’t just a Swedish church. It embraces diversity. It welcomes people from various backgrounds. It shares its space with other congregations. Calvary Praise and Worship Center and the Eritrean Christian Fellowship are among them. This sharing creates a vibrant and inclusive community. Faith Kitchen a meal program exemplifies their outreach. It serves local residents in need a testament to their commitment to service. Faith Lutheran Church. It stands as a beacon of faith and community. A place where history and the present intertwine.
