Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Detroit, Faith Community Church stands as a testament to unwavering faith and community spirit. Faith Christian Community Church, as it was originally known, began its journey in August 1986. Under the leadership of Reverend Kenneth M. Taylor, the first service was held in the warmth of Mary Scott’s home on Longfellow. Imagine that first gathering, a small group of believers united by their shared faith, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of the community. Immediately, the church adopted the governance of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Key leadership positions were filled, with Leroy Ingram as Chairman of the Steward and Trustee Boards, Donald Hamlett, Sr. as Treasurer, Mary Houston leading the Stewardess Board, Alma Jones directing Christian Education, and Waymon Hamlett, III guiding the music ministry. The congregation soon found a temporary home for worship on Puritan. A year later, they moved to Joy Road, their faith unwavering despite the relocation. In 1988, they took a leap of faith, entering into a land contract agreement for a building on Grand River. Sadly, legal complexities led to the loss of this property in 2002. However, the setback did not diminish their spirit. In 2003, Faith Community Church found its current home on Sorrento, a testament to the dedication and sacrifices of its members, who paid off a fifteen-year note in just five years. The church’s name changed in 1996, from First Christian Community to Faith Christian Community, reflecting the deep and abiding faith of its members. Faith Community Church is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community that actively serves Detroit. From nursing home ministries to back-to-school rallies providing supplies and health checks, their impact is far-reaching. They have supported the MEPS program, contributed to Simon House, and volunteered with organizations like the Salvation Army, Forgotten Harvest, Gleaners, World Medical Relief, and in street ministries. The legacy of past members who have passed on continues to inspire the congregation. Their sacrifices and example serve as a foundation for the church’s future. Faith Community Church continues its mission, striving to bear fruit and glorify their Heavenly Father.
