A beacon of faith arose from humble beginnings. Faith Christian Church, originally First Christian Community Church, started in a Detroit home in August 1986. Reverend Kenneth M. Taylor led the first service at Mary Scott’s residence on Longfellow. The church’s initial conference followed immediately. They decided to adopt the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church’s Discipline as their governing structure. Key leadership positions were filled. Leroy Ingram became Chairman of the Steward and Trustee Boards. Donald Hamlett, Sr. served as Treasurer. Mary Houston was elected President of the Stewardess Board. Alma Jones took on the role of Director of Christian Education. Waymon Hamlett, III became Minister of Music. The congregation soon found a place of worship at 10573 Puritan. A year later, they relocated to 14105 Joy Road. In 1988, they entered into a land contract agreement for a building at 16310 Grand River. Legal issues led to the loss of this property in 2002. Undeterred, the congregation persevered. In 2003, Faith Christian Church purchased its current location at 9640 Sorrento. Remarkably, they paid off a fifteen-year note in just five years. This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the church members. In 1996, the church’s name was officially changed to Faith Christian Community Church. This change marked their tenth anniversary and symbolized their unwavering faith. Faith Christian Church is dedicated to demonstrating God’s love through service to one another and the community. Their outreach has included a nursing home ministry and back-to-school rallies providing supplies and basic health checks. They also supported the MEPS program and contributed to organizations like Simon House. Their volunteer efforts extend to the Salvation Army, Forgotten Harvest, Gleaners, World Medical Relief, and street ministry in the Cass Corridor. Faith Christian Church remembers and honors its members who have passed. Their legacy continues to inspire. Looking to the future, Faith Christian Church strives to expand its impact and bring glory to God.
