A humble beginning. That’s what Faith Baptist Church in San Diego represents. Right here before us stands a testament to perseverance. It’s a story etched in the very stones of its walls.
Faith Baptist Church didn’t emerge overnight. It began as a small group’s dream. A small group in San Diego recognized a need. They yearned for a Baptist church in their burgeoning city. Alonzo Horton the city’s founder saw this need too. He challenged Protestant denominations to build. He believed in the power of faith to shape a community.
On June 5 1869 Reverend C F Weston organized the First Baptist congregation. They started small in a downtown room. Their first church building opened on October 3 1869. This building stood on Seventh Street near F. The land a generous gift from Alonzo Horton himself.
Horton’s generosity extended further. He presented the congregation with a church bell. This was the first church bell ever used in new San Diego. Today that very bell hangs in the rafters of the current church building in University City. It still rings on special occasions. It’s a tangible link to the past a reminder of Horton’s vision. The bell’s dedication took place on October 31 1869.
Reverend B S McLafferty arrived on December 18 1869 to lead the growing congregation. The church thrived and expanded. A new building was constructed in 1888. It stood proudly at the corner of 10th and E streets. Each building represented a milestone in Faith Baptist Church’s journey.
